Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling

CNC milling is a conventional manufacturing technique that uses a computer to control a milling cutter. It can be used to precisely machine geometries and features into a substrate, or to mill hot embossing stamps and jigs that may be used to fabricate micro structured features in devices. The equipment typically mills material in either two or three axes, metal, ceramics or plastics depending on the cutter that is used.

5 axis CNC mill with 2 axis of gripping
SA Node University of South Australia
Description
5 axis turn mill machining centre
Related Information
Multi purpose 5 + 2 axes turn/mill dedicated to precisely machine complex geometry parts to within 1µm tolerances. The system provides true simultaneous 5-dimensional interpretation of micro and macro structures, 42,000rpm milling spindle and 6,000rpm turning Spindle. Bar feed and 2 axis fixturing enable the machine to transfer a part from the turning spindle to softjaws to machine the backface, thus completeing multiple set-ups on mutliple parts automatically. Surface roughness down to 10nm Sa. Part sizes range from less than 0.1mm to 200mm diamter.
