Quantum Pioneer Andrew Dzurak Joins Pearcey Hall of Fame

Prof Andrew Dzurak was elevated to the Pearcey Hall of Fame in November 2024. As Andrew was overseas at the time of the presentation, the Chair of the Pearcey Foundation presented the certificate in person on Friday 14 February at the Diraq lab at UNSW Campus in Kensington, NSW.

Andrew is a recognised global leader in the field of quantum computing and, along with fellow UNSW academic Professor Michelle Simmons AO, he has been at the forefront of establishing Australia as a world leader in quantum computing.

Andrew is the CEO and founder of Diraq, a quantum computing company using silicon ‘quantum dot’ technology developed by his team at UNSW. Prior to launching Diraq, Andrew was the founding director (2007-2022) of ANFF-NSW. He also played a key role in establishing the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology and holds positions as a Scientia Professor at UNSW, an ARC Laureate Fellow and a member of the Sydney Quantum Academy’s executive board.

In 2012, Andrew and his colleague Andrea Morello demonstrated the world’s first silicon quantum bits (qubits). Over the past decade, they have developed a scalable technology by modifying the common transistors found in today’s silicon chips. Diraq aims to revolutionise quantum computing by increasing the number of qubits on a single chip to many millions, and ultimately billions, for practical use in commercial applications.

The Pearcey Foundation operates across the Australian ICT sector, celebrating achievements with national and state awards and engaging in debates on productivity, the digital economy and national infrastructure. Established in 1998 to honour Dr Trevor Pearcey, the Foundation aims to raise the profile of the ICT industry and attract young Australians to this exciting high-tech sector by celebrating past, present and future heroes.

Congratulations to Prof Andrew Dzurak on his induction into the Pearcey Hall of Fame. His pioneering work in quantum computing and leadership at Diraq and ANFF-NSW sets a high standard and inspires future Australian innovators. ANFF celebrates his achievements and looks forward to the continued impact of his work.
