Enabling Australian R&D
The Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) was founded in 2007 to overcome hurdles to R&D success by providing open access to micro and nanofabrication equipment, essential to Australia’s scientific and economic future. It was one of nine original research infrastructure facilities established under the Commonwealth’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
ANFF owns and provides access to capabilities that can assist in both the development of new products and improvements to current production methods. Each Node provides expertise in a specific area, including advanced materials, nanoelectronics & photonics and nano-bio applications. The ANFF commitment to providing a world-class, open-access user facility is underpinned by the sharing of best practice in service provision across the network.
THE MISSION
To provide access to micro and nanofabrication equipment for Australia’s researchers and industry.

Strategy for expanding support
ANFF’s Strategy is outlined in a renewed plan which launched mid 2024. This strategy provides an updated Vision and Purpose statement for the organisation, aimed at improving support for our clients and ensuring economic outcomes. The strategy builds on our cultural foundations and has defined 4 Strategic Initiatives where we will focus our resources.
- National research infrastructure excellence
- Capturing the benefits by delivering a pipeline of commercialisation outcomes
- Extending ANFF’s portfolio of services
- Communicating ANFF’s value
This focus enables ANFF to continue to develop and improve our already impressive capabilities, support our clients in their translation journeys, make sure those that need our help find us, and look for opportunities to add additional services to our portfolio.
Engage with us
Two additional avenues for interaction have been implemented, including the establishment of a team of Client Engagement Facilitators (CEFs) and the creation of an entirely new platform within the Network’s headquarters, ANFF-C.

ANFF-C
ANFF-C has been created to deliver out-of-lab support for commercially promising ANFF-enabled projects in collaboration with their stakeholders.
For the people
A broad portfolio of equipment is what makes ANFF special, but people are what make it exceptional. It’s our responsibility to ensure that we support present and future staff and clients by providing career paths, ensuring inclusivity, and guaranteeing our practices are as sustainable as possible.
