ICONN 2024 Spotlight: Collaborate and Commercialise

ICONN 2024 explored the deep pipelines we require to translate research into high impact commercial products and services. This conference brought together over 450 highly engaged delegates, including academic researchers, industry, regulators and suppliers, to investigate how they can collaborate to build successful outcomes.

The second day of the conference focused on our Collaborate theme (Collaborate tile insert).  A touching tribute to Chris Fell, Emeritus Professor of UNSW/UNSW Chemical Engineering, by Dr Jane Fitzpatrick, CEO of The Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) led off the beginning of the plenary session.

The inaugural Chris Fell Plenary Lecture was delivered by Prof. Sierin Lim from Nanyang Technological University Singapore. Prof Lim took us on her collaboration journey of repurposing nature to develop biomimetic nanostructures from proteins and cellulose for biomedical applications.

Day 3 involved all things involved in Commercialisation! (Commercialise tile insert). Jumpstarting the day was a brilliant panel comprised of Prof Bronwyn Fox (Chief Scientist CSIRO), Dr Charlie Day (CEO Jupiter Ionics) and Prof Mark Hutchinson (Uni Adelaide, ARC Future Fellow, AEA Advisory Board Member).

Moderated by ICONN 2024 Co-chair Sally McArthur, the panelists provided wonderful insights reflecting on their own experiences and what is needed in our research and translation ecosystems to build the next generation of nanotech across diverse sectors.

As ICONN24 comes to a close, we can reflect on the benefits that such an opportunity provides to connect with our ecosystem and look forward to the next time this community gathers at ICONN 2026.
